Gary Alfonso GENERAL MANAGER Joining the global Fox Networks Group to head up its strategy and operations in Africa has been an almost natural progression for this media professional, who has spent almost 30 years in journalism, broadcasting and television. But he prefers to call it “the greatest and luckiest move of my professional life”. An ardent chess player, Gary regards the experience and knowledge gained in the African media industry as the perfect platform to compete successfully for FNG Africa on the continent. From humble beginnings as a junior producer for the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation and at the SABC, Gary has, over the years, added the title of reporter, producer, executive producer, news editor, head of programming, general manager, chief operating officer and managing director to his name. However, one could argue that his greatest achievement is the enthusiasm he has ignited among others for television, media and broadcasting across Africa. He’s worked as far afield as Tunisia, Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Namibia, to name a few. Gary, who is currently the Head of Fox Networks Group Africa, has led media companies in Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa, where he launched amongst others CNBC Africa, Forbes Africa and Summit TV. Gary admits to a love for negotiating multi-level deals and creating strategic alliances and partnerships. It’s a skill that has come in handy in FNG Africa’s expansion into Sub-Saharan Africa, where Fox Sports recently concluded agreements with 16 countries in West Africa. He was also instrumental in setting up the first ever Africa Boxing tournament for Fox Sports in Nairobi, which featured WBA-sanctioned title fights between boxers from Kenya and Tanzania. He was also part of the team that launched the Fox Life channel in October 2016, which has introduced fresh, locally produced programmes alongside the trusted, high-quality, premium US studio content. He has overseen the launch of National Geographic content repositioning in the past few months, which has delighted audiences with a new genre of scripted/factual series such as Mars. Also coming soon is the Albert Einstein story Genius, and Origins, featuring mankind’s link to the continent of Africa. Gary and the FNG Africa team also supports initiatives of Nat Geo Wild, which continues to produce compelling content such as Savage Kingdom and Before the Flood. He lists, as a highlight in his career, accompanying former president Nelson Mandela to New York and Washington shortly after he was elected South Africa’s first democratic leader in 1994. He holds an MBA from Henley UK, but is quick to say one of the things he likes most about Fox Networks Group is the motto “we take our work seriously, but not ourselves”. Africa Africa’s best drive global television brands, locally
